Need infinite money? Simply create Genshin Impact. That’s the advice I have for you today as news of the gacha game’s ludicrous giga-success is delivered by Sensor Tower, an analytics company. Horrifyingly, that only seems to include the mobile revenues, so you can add on top the console and PC versions.
Calling it the “top-grossing gacha mobile game in Q1 2022”, Sensor Tower goes on to explain that it took between 171 and 195 days to generate each billion revenue, thus averaging the big one billion per six months. They also point out that “the title has ranked as the No. 3 revenue generating mobile title globally” behind Honor of Kings (a Tencent mobile MOBA) and PUBG Mobile.
Where’s the cash coming from? China, naturally, where 30.7 percent of iOS revenue comes from. Sensor Tower says they don’t track Android numbers in China as it uses a third-party store, meaning these numbers are likely even higher. Japan and the US come in second and third.
A lot of the success seems to come from the regular updates and constant reasons to log in that Genshin Impact provides. Live service as a concept is exceedingly popular, obviously, but games that actually update regularly with what their community wants are rarer. The ones that manage it – Genshin, League of Legends, FF14, to name a few – reap the rewards.
