Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll says his team’s loss to the Rams yesterday was something they did to themselves. Carroll has it mostly right. As a team, they committed far too many penalties, they turned the ball over at a crucial moment and they failed to manage the situation right when the game was on the line.
However, some of it was out of their hands. Geno Smith’s elbow injury was one of them. Worse, a few of those penalties were of the egregious, no-impact-on-the-play type of call, like the hands to the face flag that went against Riq Woolen. There was also this ghastly pass interference call against Devon Witherspoon in the end zone.

The Seahawks also suffered from a bit of bad luck in the tech department at a critical moment. According to Geno Smith, his helmet speaker went out right after the big completion to DK Metcalf on the final drive. So, he decided to call a quick run to try to gain some yards for Jason Myers.

Smith says this was the only instance in the game when the equipment malfunctioned, which is pretty convenient timing for the Rams.
