Gennady Golovkin insists he has no plans to retire in the foreseeable future despite being bested again by arch-rival Canelo Alvarez.

‘GGG’ was firmly second best from the outset on a hugely disappointing night in Las Vegas on Saturday as one of modern boxing’s most notable feuds came to a one-sided end at the T-Mobile Arena.

Golovkin looked every one of his 40 years at times during a tough trilogy showdown against Canelo, with the final scorecards of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 hugely flattering the Kazakh in the end.

Many questioned if Golovkin would choose to hang up the gloves and end a truly illustrious career if he was to lose again to his biggest nemesis, but retirement is evidently not a thought that has even crossed his mind at this stage.

Golovkin was eager to remind people that despite his failure in trying to claim the undisputed titles from Canelo at 168lbs, he remains the reigning IBF and IBO champion back down at middleweight, while he also added the WBA ‘Super’ gold with victory over Ryota Murata in Japan back in April.

Jermall Charlo currently holds the WBC belt, while Erislandy Lara is the WBA’s ‘regular’ champion at 160lbs. The WBO strap is now held by Golovkin’s compatriot Janibek Alimkhanuly after the interim champion was fully upgraded last month following the vacating of the belt by Demetrius Andrade.

Asked if he would continue to fight after losing for the second time to Canelo, Golovkin told DAZN: “Absolutely, I have a great plan. I have a lot of appointments.

“Congrats to Canelo, congrats to all boxing fans. Remember guys, I have three belts at 160. I can come back guys. I’m still a champion.”
