'Genius' hack to stop flies getting into your wheelie bin that costs as little as 30p

A woman has been praised for her "genius" life hack that will keep flies away from your wheelie bin.

As the UK basks in the July heatwave, temperatures are set to rise. But with the warmer weather comes an increase in flies and maggots attracted to rubbish, in turn creating a much smellier bin.

One woman previously used her TikTok account, @sisterpledgecleans, to share a video of the clever way in which she washes out her bins, which keeps the flies at bay. And as we enter another UK heatwave, this trick will certainly come in handy.

The woman uses a "generous amount of table salt" which has been hailed as a "genius" life-hack. Table salt can be bought for as little as 35p in M&S, the Mirror reports, or even 30p in Asda.

In her viral video, she explained the salt in the bottom of clean bins will soak up any leaked fluid and flies and maggots die when they feed on it. Thousands commented on the life hack, sharing their thoughts and thanking her for letting them know about it.

One person said: "Oh thank you!! Our black bin is full of flies, yet our compost/food bin isn't. Makes no sense" as another replied: "Add baking powder and it won't smell."

The video, which was shared last year, raked in over 400,000 likes and over 45,000 shares. One person added: "Tried it AND IT WORKS!!"
