High on the list of complaints from primary care physicians is the time spent typing lengthy notes into electronic medical records used for treatment, billing, and administrative purposes. Generative AI could help combat the workload crisis.
Generative AI refers to a subset or specific application of artificial intelligence techniques that involve generating new content or data based on patterns and examples from existing data. It involves training models to learn the underlying structure and characteristics of a dataset and then using that knowledge to create new, original content.
Generative AI models aim to understand the patterns and distributions of the training data in order to generate new samples that resemble the original data.
For now, a practical use for generative AI in health care is easing the heavy burden of documentation that takes doctors and nurses hours to complete.
Some doctors already use Abridge’s software to record patient visits on their smartphones and summarize them for treatment plans and billing. For years, many spent hours typing these medical notes, but now, they just edit what AI produces and finish their daily patient visit documentation in 20 minutes or so.
Other companies developing generative AI for “medical conversation” include Ambience Healthcare, Augmedix, Suki, and Microsoft’s (MSFT) Nuance.
Physicians at the University of Kansas Medical Center have used generative AI software for the last two months. The medical center plans to make the software available to its 2,200 physicians. Still, they’re reluctant to use it in diagnosis, concerned its recommendations and reasoning might be unreliable.
Some other potential use cases for artificial intelligence in healthcare include research, drug discovery, disease diagnosis, medical imaging, and more.
