General Motors Caps Off An Epic 2024 With 114,000 EV Sales

  • General Motors ended 2024 with a record 114,432 EVs sold.
  • The Chevy Equinox EV was GM's top-selling EV in 2024, followed by the Cadillac Lyriq and the Chevy Blazer EV.
  • It was also a record fourth quarter for GM's EVs.

General Motors has pulled off one of the best comebacks of 2024. Towards the end of 2023, things looked grim at the company, with production problems, a chain of delays and software nightmares dogging its electric vehicle efforts. Fast-forward by 12 months, and GM somehow turned 2024 into a banner year, expanding its EV market share and posting record sales for all its brands.

The automaker said on Friday that its overall U.S. sales increased 4% to 2.7 million units—its highest total since before the pandemic. EV sales were the real highlight, increasing 125% in the fourth quarter compared to the same period in 2023 and surging 50% for the full year. GM sold a record 114,432 EVs in 2024.

Final quarter results are generally good for automakers thanks to holiday deals. But GM’s EV momentum wasn’t just a holiday spike—it was a year-long climb fueled by a diverse lineup that spanned affordable crossovers to luxury SUVs.

The automaker had 10 fully electric models on sale by the end of the year across the Chevy, Cadillac and GMC brands. Nearly all saw significant sales growth in the final quarter and 2024.

Equinox EV Leads The Pack

The Chevy Equinox EV led GM’s EV sales chart for the year, racking up 28,847 sales. The bulk of those sales came in the last three months of the year alone when Chevy sold 18,089 units of the electric crossover. As the most affordable EV in the U.S. with over 300 miles of range, the Equinox EV starts at $35,000 before incentives. With the $7,500 federal clean vehicle credit factored in, qualifying buyers can snag one for as low as $27,500—if they meet income limits too.

Hot on its heels was the Cadillac Lyriq, GM’s previous EV sales leader, with 28,402 units sold in 2024, including 8,000 in the fourth quarter. Cadillac’s lineup is only getting stronger, with the Escalade IQ gaining traction (670 units sold in December) and the smaller Optiq and seven-seater Vistiq set to hit showrooms soon.

The Chevy Blazer EV did well too, with buyers snagging 23,115 units last year.

Electric Trucks And Vans Played Supporting Roles

While the electric crossovers did all the heavy lifting for GM, its pickups and BrightDrop vans also added some significant numbers.

GMC sold nearly 14,000 Hummer EVs (pickup and SUV), an impressive feat for a vehicle that starts at $100,000. Meanwhile, the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV added 7,428 and 1,788 units, respectively. BrightDrop’s electric delivery vans—now under the Chevy brand—accounted for another 1,529 units.

“From my point of view, the automotive industry is driven by momentum. General Motors has momentum on its side,” said Rory Harvey, GM executive VP and president of global markets. “We showed strong momentum in electric vehicles. We have the largest EV share growth of any manufacturer. We have something for everyone, no matter what they like to drive,” he added. “The Equinox EV is finding great reception and continues to break record after record in sales.”

GM remains the largest automaker in the U.S. in terms of overall auto sales. And in the fourth quarter, its EV market share increased to 12% from 9.3% in Q3 2024. It was the second-best-selling EV maker across the second half of 2024, behind Tesla, which remains by far the largest EV producer and seller in the U.S.

Promising But Uncertain New Year

However, policy shifts may dictate how much of this momentum gets carried into the new year. President-elect Donald Trump has threatened 25% tariffs on items manufactured in Mexico and Canada, and both the Equinox EV and Blazer EV are made across our Southern border. Trump will also push to end the $7,500 federal clean vehicle credit that made EVs more accessible to a broader audience. Buckle up, because it will likely be a bumpy ride ahead.
