The deaths of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been deemed "suspicious" by New Mexico authorities, according to a search warrant affidavit released on Thursday.
Hackman, 95, and classical pianist Arakawa, 63, were discovered dead in their Santa Fe home alongside their pet dog on Wednesday night.
Initial speculation about a gas leak has been superseded by more troubling concerns, with officials stating the circumstances require "a thorough search and investigation."
"Affiant believes that the circumstances surrounding the death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak," the affidavit reads, according to Variety.
Authorities said Arakawa's body showed "obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mumification in both hands and feet," while Hackman's remains were discovered in a separate mud room with similar decomposition.
The investigation may involve searching the property's "furniture, walls, plumbing equipment, or gas lines," as the affidavit acknowledges that "individuals exposed to gas leaks (or poisonous gas) can suffer immediate and unexpected death."
Tributes have been flooding in for Hollywood icon Hackman and his wife following news of their deaths on Thursday.
