The young mayor of Bogalusa, Louisiana, has been arrested following an investigation into drug trafficking in the city, officials say.
25-year-old Tyrin Truong, who was elected mayor in 2022 at the age of just 23, is charged with transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses, unauthorized use of a moveable and soliciting for prostitutes. This follows a "comprehensive investigation" conducted by the Louisiana State Police Narcotics/Violent Crime Task Force into drug trafficking occurring in the city. The investigation began in April of 2024, reported CBS News.
The investigation found that an organization within the area had been dispensing a variety of illegal drugs, including opioids, high-grade marijuana, THC products and MDMA.
Social media was used to manage transactions and reach potential buyers, according to officials, after which the proceeds from selling the substances were used to purchase firearms. Some of the weapons purchased were then sent to individuals banned from possessing firearms, officials say.
All of them face charges of transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses. Three have been charged with conspiracy to distribute a Schedule I controlled substance, and one has been additionally charged with distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance.
"We are going to continue to invest time and resources into helping the citizens of Bogalusa," District Attorney Collin Sims said in a statement. "We are not finished."
"We have zero tolerance for wrong doing, especially, from public officials. I'm very proud of all of our law enforcement agencies who worked on this investigation," said Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill.
"A variety of other matters and individuals remain under investigation in connection with matters both separate from and related to the subject matter of today's arrests," said Louisiana State Police.
