Gemma Atkinson was 'full of worry' over smear test scare

Gemma Atkinson has told her Instagram followers she had a smear test scare. Former Hollyoaks and Emmerdale actress Gemma, 37, spoke about her 'horrible' month after being 'full of worry' after having cervical screening, which checks the health of the cervix to help prevent cancer.

Mother-of-one Gemma Gemma says "they weren't happy" with the results so she then underwent a colposcopy, a test to take a closer look at the cervix, the opening between the vagina and the womb. During a colposcopy a microscope is inserted to look at the cervix in greater detail.

She was relieved to be told immediately that 'everything was fine' and has urged fans not to worry if they're also invited for a colposcopy. "Wanted to keep it real with you lot on here as it's always like having an extended family. It's been a bloody horrible month," she wrote on her Instagram Stories.

"Early Sept I had to have a colposcopy from smear results that they weren't happy with. Thankfully everything was fine. No issues at all but the build up to waiting wasn't so great. I think we automatically assume the worst as humans don't we!"

In a separate video she addressed the experience, saying: "It's nothing painful at all." She told her followers: "It's just pressure. It's definitely worth having it done. So 100-per-cent have it done. Don't worry." She added: "I say 'don't worry' a lot for someone who was full of worry. It was fine she told me then and there."

Gemma also told fans that after the colposcopy she had a wisdom tooth removed after suffering from toothache. "The day after that I had my tooth out and then the dry socket started which was agony for 10 days," she wrote. The Hits Radio presenter, who competed in Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, then became poorly with another infection and one of her beloved doogs Norman was taken ill.

"I then last weekend became poorly with another infection which I'm thankfully now getting over (will be back in work Monday) and yesterday Norman's breathing went funny. Very shallow and fast," she said.

"They did some bloods and he too has an infection and the enzymes in his liver are high. He's on antibiotics and he has an X ray on Tues. It's safe to say I'm glad to see the back of Sept. They say bad luck happens in 3s so I'm hoping that's it for a while!"
