GCSE Results: Grade Boundaries explained

The closer results day comes, a serious case of the butterflies sweeps students across the UK and students wait to see if all that hard work paid off.

Changes have been made to the GCSE grading system, as education has now devolved and each jurisdiction can decide its own policy.

After England's introduction to the 1-9 grading system, the governments in Northern Ireland and Wales reviewed their policies on GCSE grading. In 2016, the education system changed their grading system.

Consequently, CCEA introduced a grading system of nine letter grade scale form A*-G (including a C*).

This will apply to this years students that have been taught from 2017. Other awarding organisations, however, may offer a 9-1. There are conversion tables below to decipher which grade your child has recieved.

What are the changes and what will they mean?

In summer 2019, CCEA will award new A*–G GCSE grades, which will include a C* grade.

The A* grade will be aligned to the grade 9. Students taking exams with AQA, Pearson, Eduqas and OCR, will receive GCSEs graded 9–1, where 9 is the highest grade and 1 is the lowest.

Students in Northern Ireland may receive both letters and numbers in their GCSE results, so it is important to understand how these grades compare.

The new grading system A* and 9, will reflect exceptional performance from students, as the new grading system will make it more difficult for students to receive an A*.

What is the new C* Grade?

The new C* grade will equate to a grade 5. Approximately the same percentage of students that achieved a C grade and above in the past will achieve grades C or 4 and above. Introducing the C* grade will mean that the percentage of students achieving grades B and C will reduce. Approximately the same percentage of students achieving grades D–G will achieve grades 3–1.
