Gavin & Stacey star floored by discovery about dad on ITV's DNA Journey

Gavin & Stacey star Alison Steadman has been speaking about her shock over the revelation that their father was adopted, which none of her family knew, and she only discovered while appearing on the ITV show DNA Journey. Alison, who played Pam Shipman in the hit sitcom, was joined by on-screen husband Mick, aka Larry Lamb, as they chatted about DNA Journey on the ITV morning show Good Morning Britain today, November 1.

Alison told hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid that it was "upsetting" when she found out her father was adopted and Larry said the discovery "knocked her sideways!" Alison said: “My father was adopted, which I didn't know, none of us knew in our family...I don’t think [my father] knew."

Alison added she was grateful to have Larry with her when they made the shocking discovery. She said: "He was eight months old. I was so glad that I had Larry with me honestly because I was just so upset by it, I really was...My grandmother, my aunt, my uncle they all knew [and] they didn't tell me, but they were lovely people that's the main thing and I love them to bits. But to find out suddenly that my grandma wasn’t my grandma as it was was quite upsetting."

Larry also found out that one of his parents was adopted, his mother. He said: “I’d found out the same sort of thing - my mother was adopted...And there was a whole chain of things that sprang off that, so I kind of got where Alison was. Mine was kind of easier to accept but Ally’s, this was a big shaking of the keystone.” Alison and Larry were spotted at Barry Island earlier in 2022 while filming for DNA Journey, which will air this Friday, November 4 at 9pm on ITV.

Larry also confirmed that there would not be a Gavin & Stacey Christmas special this year, as he told viewers not to hold their breath. He said: “I wouldn't hold your breath - and certainly not this Christmas!”
