Gavin & Stacey fan’s surprise proposal at Gwen’s house in Barry

TV show Gavin & Stacey has won the hearts of many fans across the UK with viewers visiting Barry Island in their thousands to see where the show is partly set.

But one couple has made Gavin & Stacey history with the first marriage proposal at character Stacey's childhood home, where her mother Gwen still lives in the show. Sean Shepherd, 26, chose the location to pop the question to girlfriend Georgia Kempfter, 27.

While Sean had planned the trip to Barry Island and was planning to propose, things could have been a little different if owner Glenda Kenyon had not been at home when they decided to knock her door and ask for a look inside.

Luckily she was very welcoming and while Glenda's home has been visited by tens of thousands of fans over the years - you can read more about that here - it was the first time a proposal had taken place there.

Georgia said: “When she (Glenda) said that nobody else has ever done that, that was special.”

The proposal was a complete surprise for Georgia, but Sean had the proposal planned for a few weeks, asking Georgia's dad's permission and pretending to Georgia that he had a "birthday surprise". They had travelled down from north Wales, where they live, to go to a concert and visit Barry Island.

She said: “I knew that we were going to the house and we were just going to do some sightseeing… Sean said I’ve got you a birthday surprise and I had no clue what it was, he didn’t give me any clues, nothing. And then he just got down on one knee in the middle of the dining room.”

Sean and Georgia will always remember their engagement (Sean Shepherd)

The couple had been fans of Gavin & Stacey since the series first came out in 2007 and have now watched each series at least three times - however, they have admitted they are not like Gavin and Stacey as a couple.

They love the humour and comedy of the show, Georgia said: “The humour, the comedy side of it. It cracks us both up every time we watch it.”

After the proposal the couple enjoyed some chips on the Barry Island beachfront, another key location in the show. Georgia said: “It’s lovely, we went down to the beachfront after, we had a walk down there and got some chips, it was really nice.”

Georgia and Sean are hoping to get married in Cyprus but are also planning on returning to Barry Island in the summer, taking their two daughters with them.

The couple have been together since 2015, after meeting through mutual friends, and have always enjoyed watching Gavin & Stacey together.

Georgia said she will always remember the proposal while watching Gavin & Stacey. She said: “It will stay with me forever, it will be good every time we watch it as well that we will know that is where we got engaged.”

Sean and Georgia also posted their engagement in a Gavin & Stacey fan group on Facebook and received over 570 likes and over 90 comments congratulating them.
