Gavin and Stacey Christmas special: James Corden announces 'festive treat' as show returns sending fans into frenzy

James Corden has revealed Gavin and Stacey is returning for a Christmas special.

The hit British sitcom, created by Corden and Ruth Jones, ended almost 10 years ago after three series and a festive special.

The loss of the show has been mourned by fans ever since, with viewers desperately hoping for its return – prayers which have now been answered, after Corden revealed the show will make a one-off return in December.

“Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while,” Corden wrote on Twitter. “We’re excited to share it with you. See you on Christmas Day @BBCOne #GavinandStacey.”

Corden shared a picture of the bulky script alongside his exciting tweet, sending fans into a frenzy.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Rob Brydon (Uncle Bryn), Larry Lamb (Mick) and Alison Steadman (Pam) will also return for the one-off.

“Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like,” Jones and Corden said in a joint statement. “And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special.

“We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas.”

The breakthrough BBC Three hit – which started in 2007 – centred on Essex boy Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Welsh girl Stacey (Joanna Page) who fell in love and married, exploring the impact of that relationship on their friends and family.

Further details about the Christmas special will be announced in due course.
