Ruth Jones has offered a no-nonsense update on fans' expectations for the Gavin & Stacey finale.
In May, James Corden, the show’s co-creator, revealed that the beloved BBC comedy, which he co-wrote with Ruth, would return for a final episode airing on Christmas Day.
The series, which originally ran from 2007 to 2010, made a triumphant comeback in 2019 with a Christmas special. That episode left viewers on a major cliffhanger as Vanessa Shanessa ‘Nessa’ Jenkins proposed to Neil "Smithy" Smith.
Eager fans are dying to know how the story will end and if lingering questions will finally be resolved, but the creators have been careful to keep spoilers tightly under wraps.
Lead actors Mathew Horne and Joanna Page will be back, joined by familiar faces like Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, and Rob Brydon.
In a new interview, James Corden hinted that the finale would be "hard to watch," while Jones firmly stated that this episode will truly mark the end.
She told The Big Issue: “I keep telling people this finale might not be what you are expecting. And I guarantee we will definitely not be coming back.”
Corden added: “What people are going to see on Christmas Day is the culmination of a 20-year love story, which hopefully shows, if nothing else, that love is complicated and messy and for everyone.”
Set five years after the last episode, the special will follow Gavin and Stacey as they try to "spice up their 17-year marriage," while Nessa embarks on a new business venture, according to the BBC.
46-year-old Corden and Jones, 58, previously starred together in the TV series Fat Friends, which aired from 2000 to 2005.
Following the success of Gavin and Stacey, Jones created and starred in the Sky One comedy-drama Stella, while James became the host of the US talk show The Late Late Show.
In the same interview, the pair spoke about how their friendship has evolved, with Corden admitting that he “treasures” their friendship now more than ever.
He said of their near 25-year-long friendship: “I can’t tell you how we’ve changed. But I know we have changed a lot.”
To which Jones weighed in: “We are kinder to each other now. We’ve grown up a bit.”
Agreeing, Corden added: “I can only speak for myself, but I treasure our friendship more today than I ever have. And I value it even more than the show.”
