Gatwick Airport 'incident' sees man detained by police

An incident at Gatwick Airport has seen a man detained by police tonight (Friday). Sussex Police posted on social media at 6.50pm that they were on the scene.

The nature of the incident has not been disclosed, but some eyewitnesses on social media mentioned a "suspicious vehicle". Police had put a cordon in place at the drop-off parking area at the North Terminal.

Sussex Police say they will report further details as they become available. The tweet read: "We are currently dealing with an incident at Gatwick Airport. A man has been detained.

"As a precaution, a cordon is in place at the drop-off parking area at the North Terminal. We will provide more information as soon as we are able."

People on social media were talking about what they've seen, including "dozens of incident response vehicles, access to roads blocked by police & armed police". Jon G says: "stuck in Gatwick north Terminal departures. The carparks are closed for "our safety" and no one is allowed near. Policy patrolling the area and blocking cars from coming into the terminal [sic]. It's chaos."

Cassie Parkes tweeted: "Trying to get to Gatwick’s North Terminal and it’s closed completely, apparently due to a suspicious vehicle."

Shuttle buses were also cancelled. The MB10 and MB100 shuttle buses were unable to access the North Terminal just before 6pm.
