Gateshead road to remain closed after partial building collapse

A Gateshead road is set to remain closed after a building partially collapsed on Sunday evening.

Emergency services rushed to the building on the corner of Coatsworth Road and Bewick Road in Bensham at around 6.45pm on Sunday night after stones and bricks came away from the home.

Nobody was injured in the incident and a police cordon has since been removed, but Coatsworth Road has remained closed while the building is made safe.

Diversions remain in place for motorists, with no exact timeframe for the road's reopening.

A spokesperson for Gateshead Council said: "Since the partial collapse of the building on Sunday evening, a structural engineers’ report has been provided to the building’s owner, which is now being reviewed to establish what remediation measures are required to make the building safe.

"In the meantime, the road will remain closed and appropriate safety measures will remain in place."
