Gateshead hit and run leaves 85 year-old in 'critical condition' in hospital

Officers at Northumbria Police investigating a hit and run are appealing for dashcam footage.

An 85 year-old man was left in a critical condition after the incident which happened at Woodburn, Gateshead at about 7.30pm last night (Friday, February 25).

Police say they were were contacted by the ambulance service, who were in attendance at the scene of a collision.

They say it is believed the pedestrian, an 85-year-old man, had been crossing the road when he was struck by a dark coloured vehicle which has then left the area.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was in a critical condition.

An investigation has been launched and enquiries to trace the driver are ongoing.

Police are appealing for the driver, anyone with information, or dashcam footage to get in touch.

Investigating officer Sergeant Michael Parnaby from Northumbria Police said: “This is a serious incident which has hospitalised an elderly man, and we wish him a full recovery.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are trying to establish exactly what happened which is why it’s important we speak to the driver, and anyone else who was in the area at the time.

“We would also like to hear from any motorists with dashcam footage, as this could really help us build up a clear picture of the moments before and after the collision. If you think you can help, please get in touch.”

Any witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage are asked to get in touch.
