Gas stove fire in Thornbury triggered major emergency response

A kitchen fire in Thornbury last night triggered a huge response from the fire service, with crews from three separate stations deployed to deal with the incident. The accidental fire was started when items were left placed on the cooker.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called to Kington Lane in Thornbury at 8.15pm yesterday (Sunday, February 20). Crews from Southmead, Patchway, and Thornbury were deployed to the property. On arrival, firefighters found a gas camping stove on fire in the kitchen of the property on the worktop.

Items had been accidentally placed on the cooker during a power cut, however, when electricity was restored, the stove re-engaged and led to the blaze. The stove was moved outside where it was extinguished.

Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident, but the fire service did confirm that one person was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Thornbury, Patchway and Southmead were called at 20:15 on Sunday 20 February to reports of a house fire on Kington Lane, Thornbury.

"On arrival, firefighters found a fire involving a camping gas stove. Firefighters removed the stove from the property and doused it in water to extinguish the blaze. One casualty suffering smoke inhalation was treated by ambulance crews at the scene.

"The fire has been determined as accidental. The property experienced a power cut and during the electricity outage, items were placed on the cooker. When the electricity was restored, the cooker re-engaged which led to the blaze."
