Gary 'The Canary' Carey murder suspect smeared himself in own faeces after arrest

The chief suspect in the murder of Gary "The Canary" Carey smeared himself in his own faeces in garda station after he was arrested over the killing last month.

The Irish Mirror can reveal the thug, aged in his 30s, carried out a dirty protest in a cell which he left covered in his excrement in a bid to avoid being quizzed. The gangster was lifted from Mountjoy Prison, where he is on other matters, on May 16.

Investigators believe that he was the lone gunman who blasted Carey six times in an underground car park at the Hilton hotel in Kilmainham, Dublin 8 on June 24 last year. The victim died from his injuries six weeks later.

While in Kevin Street Garda Station, he smeared himself and his cell in his own excrement. Investigators were forced to carry out questioning through the cell door.

A source said: "It's such a vile act but it seems that it was his way of trying to avoid being questioned. In the end, he was questioned but only through the cell door.

"This man hates the guards and makes no secret of it. He's an extremely dangerous criminal."

The mobster - who was once the centre of a high profile manhunt - has over 100 convictions and is a suspect in a number of attacks and shootings. He played a "central role" in an attack on gardai in February in Ballyfermot, southwest Dublin.

On that occasion, following a funeral, a garda was hit with a bottle in the face as dozens of missiles were fired at him and his colleague. Some weeks later, he was returned to jail on other matters.

Gardai believe that he shot Carey dead on behalf of Dee Dee O'Driscoll's mob. The victim - who had survived two other hits - was targeted in a drugs row. A key part of the murder investigation surrounds the silver Audi A4 getaway car and its movements before and after the attack. It was found burnt out near Blessington, Wicklow days after the shooting.

The chief suspect's arrest was the fifth as part of the major probe. Two men in their 20s who were also lifted last month are suspected of providing logistical support. A female associate of slain Carey was held on suspicion of leaking his exact location to the gang that murdered him, while another woman was also arrested.

All have been released with files going to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
