'The fume will be glorious' - Jamie Carragher ensures Gary Neville Liverpool joke backfires

Pundit Gary Neville responded to Liverpool's nightmare start against Villarreal in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp's side took a 2-0 lead into the second leg at El Madrigal this evening, having comfortably pushed their opponents aside in the first leg at Anfield last week. Unai Emery's side were far from dead and buried, though, as they came flying out the blocks on Tuesday night.

Within minutes, the comeback was on as Boulaye Dia gave them a much needed lead and reduced the deficit to just one on aggregate. It was far from the start Liverpool would have wanted as they looked to reach their third Champions League final in five years.

United legend Neville wasted no time in taking to social media, sharing a photo sipping a glass of mine just minutes after the goal.

The dig comes as no surprise gives the fierce rivalry between the two sides in the Premier League. But it wasn't to be for Villarreal as Liverpool responded in emphatic fashion in the second-half to book their spot in the final.

Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane were among the goals as the Reds came from behind to win 3-2 on the night, with an aggregate score of 5-2. Neville backtracked and posted another image on social media, this time with a more dejected look as Liverpool got the job done.

Jamie Carragher responded to Neville's jibe with a dig of his own, tweeting: "The scenes at half-time in all households across Manchester & the blue side of Merseyside, the fume will be glorious. Just the 10th Champions League final for Liverpool what a club!"

Liverpool have now reached their fourth European final under Klopp so far, including both the Europa League and Champions League. They'll face either Real Madrid or Man City in the final at the Stade de France later this month.
