Gary Neville slams 'disgraceful' and 'embarrassing' Manchester United display in defeat to Man City

Gary Neville has labelled Manchester United's display at Manchester City as 'disgraceful' after a 4-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Kevin De Bruyne gave City the lead from a Bernardo Silva cross before Jadon Sancho equalised with a curling effort. Captain De Bruyne then restored the Blues' lead with a close-range finish six minutes later.

After the break, Riyad Mahrez added a brace to ensure the three points would be staying with the Premier League champions. His first was a sublime finish following a clever corner-kick routine, while his second came with the last chance of the game as the Algerian broke the offside trap to fire past David de Gea.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle, Neville heavily criticised his old club: "Manchester United finished that game as an absolute shower," he explained.

"They were a disgrace in the final 25 minutes. The first time they’ve come up against a proper team [under Ralf Rangnick] and they’ve been given a proper doing.

"It’s not his [Rangnick's] fault. He won’t be here next season in the dugout. Who will?"

Neville had earlier attacked United's poor reaction to going 3-1 down. The former full-back said: "I have to say, Manchester United's response to going 3-1 down is embarrassing.

"I've never seen that in any game of football - 92 per cent possession [to City]. They've given up.

"I get the fact it's hard, you're playing against a top team. But they're walking around the pitch. Nowhere near good enough."

He later added: "The scoreline isn't the problem. It's the response to going 3-1 down that's the problem.

"They have thrown the towel in. It's like they have nine men. City have played brilliantly in this second half. But the effort and intensity from United in the last 20 minutes has been non-existent.

"There can be no complaints. City have been absolutely outstanding. But as a Manchester United fan, it's embarrassing."
