Gary Neville slams Cristiano Ronaldo and tells Manchester United what to do next

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville described Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to walk out of Old Trafford ahead of the conclusion of Wednesday night's 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur as 'unacceptable'.

Ronaldo, who was dropped to the bench for the visit of Spurs, refused to come on as a substitute late on in the contest, instead choosing to get up off the bench, walk back down the tunnel and head for home. Manager Erik ten Hag chose to take disciplinary action against the forward, leaving him out of the squad for Saturday's teatime trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.

The Portuguese international was also forced to train on his own at Carrington on Friday, leaving question marks surrounding his future at the club. He has started just twice in the Premier League so far this season, highlighting that he has been out-of-favour under Ten Hag.

And for former United ace Neville, Ronaldo's actions on Wednesday evening were well below the expected standard. He also conceded that United are 'better' when the 37-year-old is not playing.

"Well, it has been a big week for Erik ten Hag," Neville told Sky Sports. "I don't think he was left with any other option.

"That's the second time Cristiano Ronaldo has left Old Trafford and got in his car before his team have got back into the changing room. I have to say, as someone in the dressing room, it's something that's unacceptable.

"When you look at whether Cristiano should be selected, Manchester United are better without him - and Erik ten Hag knows that. The only thing that Cristiano and the club can do is get together in the next week and end the relationship.

"Cristiano is too good of a player, too fantastic of a character and the club have got to move on."
