Gary Neville says new threat could decide Man City and Liverpool title race

Gary Neville believes Manchester City still have the edge in the title race, but he believes Liverpool have gained a big advantage in recent weeks.

The battle for the Premier League title is set for a pivotal month with City and Liverpool still going toe-to-toe. The Reds narrowed the gap back to three points at the weekend ahead of the Blues’ trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side play their one remaining game in hand this week at Arsenal, which could decide how close his side will be to City when the two sides meet at the start of April. Given the form of both sides, that clash at the Etihad could well prove to be a title decider.

The Reds have hit form in recent weeks, having picked up wins in each of their last eight league games, helped by their January signing of Luis Diaz. The Colombian has won plaudits for his performances since making the move to Anfield from Porto on deadline day.

Neville is among those to have been hugely impressed by Diaz since his arrival in the Premier League. And the former Manchester United captain believes the forward has helped ensure the title race remains tight.

“I wouldn’t say it’s 50/50, Man City do just edge it,” Neville told Sky Sports. “But Liverpool have got five players up front who are an absolute joke.

“And Diaz, I saw him for the first time live at the Carabao Cup final and I couldn’t believe what I was watching for a player who had just entered English football. He’s absolutely sensational.

“You think about where they were, AFCON, Salah and Mane going away for a month, I thought that City would be out of sight. You thought City were going to win the league at a canter and they’ve not done.

“That’s credit to Liverpool, credit to the players, the signing of Diaz in January and the fact they’ve got a great manager who is able to drag that level of performance out of them week in week out.”
