Gary Neville runs out of superlatives for "mesmerising" Mo Salah goal vs Man City

Gary Neville was left in disbelief after Mohamed Salah scored his fourth goal in two games for Liverpool to hand them a crucial win.

Manchester City were visiting Anfield in a mouth-watering Premier League clash on Sunday evening. Salah was starting in his normal position on the right for the Reds and had been one of their most threatening players.

He saw one effort brilliantly saved by City keeper Ederson, before opening the scoring with 14 minutes to go. Alisson sent a long ball forward, with City defender Joao Cancelo was unable to deal with, allowing Salah to race through on goal.

Despite Ederson closing down the angle, the Egyptian was able to fire in what would prove to be the winner. That left Neville in a state of awe for the 30-year-old, who had endured a difficult start to the season as he used a host of superlatives to describe what he had just witnessed.

"This is special, all the talk before the game of Erling Haaland but he has just reminded us of what world-class looks like. Alisson sees that Salah is against Cancelo one-on-one and this is absolutely amazing from Salah," Neville said on Sky Sports during commentary.

"This time faced one-on-one with Alisson, he is never ever going to miss that. That first bit is mesmerising, the strength, the touch, under pressure, the finish just scoops it. What a moment that is. The confidence and the arrogance."

Salah's vital winning goal against City comes in the same week that he scored a hat-trick in the Champions League against Rangers. That led to him being hailed by boss Jurgen Klopp, with the hat-trick also beinfg the quickest in the competition's history.

"Special. Typical Mo. Very important, the whole thing. How the boys adapted to it, to the positions, to the line-up, the reaction of the boys on the pitch. I thought everybody who started tonight played really well," the Reds boss said.

"I cannot think of one player who didn’t have a good game; the two kids of the right and left wing, really good, Fabio and Harvey. And then when you can change like we changed tonight, if you can do that, the boys come on and are ready to contribute and things like this can happen.

"It’s a freak result and we all know that and we don’t make more of it than we should, but obviously it is the best we could have asked for and that is why I am pretty pleased. Yes, of course we all know when Mo, when it is running for him, he is exceptional, absolutely exceptional.

"Obviously a different position tonight coming on, it was just good. Of course, I hope for him that everything works well from now on, like I hope for us. We will have to work on it and that’s what we will do."

The win over reigning champions City moves Liverpool up to eighth place in the Premier League table. They can climb into fifth with a win over West Ham on Wednesday, if other results go their way.
