Gary Neville responds to Paul Scholes' doubts on Mason Mount transfer with Man Utd theory

Paul Scholes feels Mason Mount "hasn't kicked on" but believes the Chelsea man would benefit from a move away amid links with a switch to Old Trafford.

Manchester United are among those keen on the midfielder, whose contract is winding down and will enter its final 12 months this summer. Mount has been unable to reach an agreement with Chelsea and could move on, with Scholes adamant he would benefit from new surroundings.

The former Red Devil doesn't appear sold on Mount, however, despite him being a mainstay at Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old was handed his debut by Frank Lampard in 2019 and impressed initially, but has been unable to dominate in big games or produce in major moments, according to Scholes.

He told Premier League Productions : "Look, I like Mason Mount … does he do enough? I thought when he first came onto the scene, ‘have got a new Frank Lampard?’. I know we talked before about not comparing players to these types.

"But I expected him to score goals, a lot more goals, in big games, to win you games, he hasn’t really kicked on from there. I think a change of club might not be a bad thing for him."

Chelsea have slapped a £55m price tag on Mount, who is also on the radars of both Liverpool and Arsenal. That value could prove problematic for United, especially as the Blues have no interest in accepting a lower price. Midfield is one of several areas Erik ten Hag wants to bolster this summer.

Gary Neville has described Mount as a "coach's player" and believes he suits Ten Hag's possession-based style, which he eventually wants to implement at Old Trafford. The Dutchman has opted for a midfield trio of Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen when all available and Mount would fit that mould.

Neville told Sky Sports : "Mason Mount is a coach’s player, I think that is the best way to describe him and there have been many I have seen in my lifetime in football where they get more respect from the coaching staff for what they do than they do from the fans that are watching them.

Neville went on to add: "So I’m not surprised Mason Mount is a target for Manchester United. I don’t think it would be a priority here, but he [Ten Hag] does want midfield players. You think about Dutch coaches, they want to dominate possession, he [Ten Hag] wants that [Frenkie] de Jong, he wants players who can handle the ball.

"He loves Eriksen, he loves [Marcel] Sabitzer, he loves Fernandes. He’s left Fred and [Scott] McTominay out of the team more often than not because he loves more technical players and Mason Mount is a technical player who is available."
