Gary Neville on what Ross Wilson must do to fix Nottingham Forest strategy

Ross Wilson's work at Nottingham Forest has been laid on the table by Gary Neville.

The sporting director left Rangers last week to take over his new role as Forest's chief football officer.

He took in his first game at the Premier League club as Forest were comfortably beaten by Manchester United yesterday.

Goals in either half by Antony and Diogo Dalot were enough for Erik Ten Hag's side to climb into third spot of England's top flight.

However, on the flip side, Steve Cooper's team have been left in the relegation zone. They are level on points with 17th-placed Everton, but they are ten goals worse off than their rivals.

Wilson replaced Filippo Giraldi at the City Ground on Wednesday.

And United hero Neville reckons Wilson has his work cut out for him at Forest.

The Sky Sports pundit pointed out that Wilson needs to come up with a better long-term strategy for the club, especially in regard to how they sign players.

Neville reckons their massive multi-million-pound outlay has hindered Forest in their first top-flight campaign since 1999.

As Wilson was caught on camera taking in the action Neville said: “You mention before the money that’s been spent here – £180m – sometimes you can spend too much money and have too many players and give Steve Cooper [first-team manager] too much to think about.

"Definitely that’s the case. They signed mountains of players.

"Take it back to the start of the season when they signed Jesse Lingard on a one-year deal – even that as a strategy you start to ask questions.

"Obviously Jesse Lingard had questions to answer but also Nottingham Forest had as well – how does that fit in? Why one-year contracts?"
