Gary Neville makes blunt 'joke' assessment after Everton beat Man United

Former Manchester United stalwart Gary Neville has praised Everton after their crucial 1-0 victory over the Red Devils at Goodison Park, while branding his old team "a joke".

A first half goal from Anthony Gordon was enough to give Frank Lampard's side all three points, giving the Blues some much-needed breathing space above the Premier League relegation zone, with Burnley set to play basement club Norwich City tomorrow afternoon.

The result was just the tonic that Everton needed after suffering a worrying 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Clarets on Wednesday evening. But while Sky Sports pundit Neville was happy to give praise to the Toffees, he was equally enthusiastic to slam the efforts of his former club.

Neville Tweeted: “United a joke. Well done to Everton. Would have also been hard for Frank Lampard to hear Sean Dyche say what he said so well done to him. Some response.”

After Wednesday's loss at Turf Moor, Burnley manager Dyche revealed that he had told his players at half-time he did not think Everton knew how to win away. It led to the Clarets over-turning a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2, damaging the Blues' survival prospects. But a morale-boosting victory against United on Saturday has put the pressure back on Burnley to get a result at Norwich on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Gary Lineker couldn't help putting the boot in on United. The Match of the Day host and former Everton striker Tweeted: Massive win for @Everton. I know it’s only against @ManUtd but it’s huge nevertheless."

Everton are not back in action until April 20, when they host Leicester City at Goodison Park, before facing neighbours Liverpool at Anfield four days later.
