Gary Neville lauds 'perfect' Phil Foden involvement in Man City opener vs Leeds

Gary Neville was full of praise for Manchester City star Phil Foden after the England international laid his side's opening goal against Leeds on a plate for Rodri.

The Spanish midfielder rose above Kalvin Phillips and nodded past Illan Meslier into the far corner. Foden's delivery was pinpoint and left Rodri with the relatively simple task of breaking the deadlock.

City's opener momentarily silenced the Elland Road crowd after Leeds United put up a great fight in the opening stages. City were again forced to weather the storm from Jesse Marsch's side towards the end of the first half.

But it was Foden who was singled out for producing the standout moment of class in the opening 45 minutes. Neville said in the aftermath of the goal: "They allowed Foden to get his range, a couple of corners, a couple of wide free-kicks.

"His delivery wasn't the best but then on the fourth time of asking it's absolutely perfect. It's a lovely little touch from Rodri, Kalvin Phillips was always underneath it, he was never there. The Manchester City midfield player just needs to guide it, the pace is on the ball."

Joao Cancelo's blushes were spared earlier in the contest as he slipped in the centre circle allowing Rodrigo a free run on goal but the forward squandered a golden opportunity as he failed to spot Raphinha unmarked at the back post.
