Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has stressed the importance of the club getting their next managerial appointment correct, insisting they must source somebody that can offer "belief" to the players.
United, who have failed to win any of their last three outings in league and cup, are hoping to appoint their next permanent manager within the coming months ahead of the start of next season.
Experienced German coach Ralf Rangnick, who was appointed interim boss back in November until the end of the campaign, has struggled to have the desired impact, piling more pressure on the Reds' hierarchy to ensure their next appointment is the right one.
Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag of Ajax remain the frontrunners for the role, but United are yet to have settled on who will take over from Rangnick.
However, whoever does land the role, according to Neville, must display the capability of installing belief into the players, as well as being capable of taking the club forward.
Neville told Sky Sports : "Manchester United have to get that appointment of the manager right in the summer because the manager sets the tone for the club.
"Who is that figurehead at Manchester United? At Manchester City, they have Pep Guardiola who stands out there and Liverpool have Jurgen Klopp. They are people that stand out there and have authority, have control and around them they have got very good operators as well.
"They also have very good structures in place and have solidity and stability.
"Manchester United basically need someone that can go out there in a Friday press conference, and after the game, and give those players belief.
"Every time a manager speaks in a press conference, he is giving a message to the fans and to the players. I have to say that they must get that right next time, in terms of getting someone who can really carry the club forward.
"It is a huge club but there is a lot of work to be done at the moment."
