Gary Neville highlights 'interesting' Mikel Arteta Arsenal tactic amid Liverpool complaints

Arsenal continued to play at their flowing best against Liverpool on Sunday. The Gunners came into the trip to Anfield on the back of seven straight Premier League games and full of confidence.

Mikel Arteta's men saw their lead at the top of the table trimmed to only five points on Saturday after Manchester City comfortably beat Southampton 3-1. However, the north Londoners responded by racing into a 2-0 lead in the opening half-hour against Liverpool.

Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus put Arsenal ahead before Mohamed Salah halved the deficit before half-time. However, the Gunners have already been accused of implementing some in-game management to waste time.

After Martinelli's opener, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale required treatment with one of his eyes before Jesus went down shortly after doubling the lead. On both occasions, Arteta made the most of the opportunity to gather the rest of his players around the touchline to hand out instructions.

And Neville was quick TO highlight the tactic by the Spaniard. "It’s interesting, when Liverpool got a chance last time with Robertson, Ramsdale went down. When they got a chance this time, Gabriel went down," the former Manchester United man said on Sky Sports.

"You just wonder whether Arteta’s said we can’t let them get ahead of steam, every time there’s a chance, kill the game for a minute or so. It’s clever if he’s done that. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence."
