Gary Neville has warned Erik ten Hag that Mason Mount might not be the right signing for Manchester United. The 24-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford recently, with his contract at Chelsea expiring in 12 months.
football.london understands that the two clubs have now reached an agreement worth around £60million for Mount, who has already agreed personal terms with the Red Devils. It's believed that United will pay the Blues £55m, plus a further £5m in add-ons, and the England international will now undergo the formalities of joining a new club.
Chelsea had been working closely with Mount over an extension for the past year or so, and there was even confidence before last year's World Cup that a deal could be struck. But, once he returned from Qatar, an offer was no longer on the table – despite the thought that a verbal agreement had been reached.
In February, the west Londoners reopened talks with Mount but he didn't want to sign a one-year extension, which would have seen his salary increase, football.london understands. However, the proposal was turned down and, ever since, the Englishman has looked set leave his boyhood club.
While many United fans will be excited by the potential arrival of Mount, Neville has questioned whether he'll complement Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in a midfield trio. As quoted by the Metro, the former United defender said: "I am surprised about the Mason Mount one, to be honest with you.
"For the reported £60million fee… he is a very good player, that isn't a question for me. But I look at the players United have got already in terms of Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Fred and Scott McTominay.
"Do I think Mount is the player to go in and sort all that out? I'm not quite sure. I think you would have been better off going and playing £100million plus on Jude Bellingham or £80-100million on Declan Rice and getting something you think can be the real thing.

"Mount would be a very good addition to United's squad, but it is a lot of money for a squad addition. Does Mount, Casemiro and Fernandes work as a midfield three?
"Spending £60million, you have got to get that jump towards winning the league from third place. United, at this moment in time, they haven't got the money and they haven't got the promise of the new ownership to be able to throw the big money at players."
