Gary Neville gives 'unpalatable' verdict on Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United behaviour

Gary Neville has been left unimpressed by Cristiano Ronaldo's actions this summer, describing them as "unpalatable for me to watch".

Ronaldo threatened to disrupt Erik ten Hag's first pre-season in charge of the club when he made his desire to leave United public just before the players were set to return for training after the summer break. The No.7 didn't travel on the club's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to family reasons amid the uncertainty surrounding his future.

While United were away and enjoyed a productive tour without their talisman, Ronaldo remained in Portugal and training individually but no clubs came forward to offer him his escape route. The 37-year-old returned to Carrington on Tuesday to hold talks with Ten Hag.

However, Ronaldo did return to training later in the week and started under the Dutchman for the first time against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. He played the first 45 minutes but then left Old Trafford early, a move that has since been criticised by Ten Hag.

Neville does not like how his former teammate has been acting this summer. “Let me be really clear, Ronaldo’s achievements in football go beyond anything that anybody could ever wish for and imagine," he said on The Overlap podcast.

"He’ll go down in the top players of all time and always will be, and what happens this summer at Manchester United will be forgotten about in 20 years. But it’s unpalatable for me to watch, as an ex-Manchester United captain, an ex-Manchester United senior player, and thinking that at this moment in time the star player in the dressing room is playing up.

“It happened at times over the last few years where you had [Paul] Pogba’s agent – not necessarily Pogba all the time but his agent – always playing up with the club. You can’t have your star player in a club running the shop. You cannot have it.”
