Gary Neville 'feels sorry' for Erik ten Hag after Manchester United confirmation

Gary Neville admits he 'feels sorry' for Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, but has no doubts the club will eventually rise to the top once again. Ten Hag is set to take the reigns at the end of this season, after he was officially announced as United's next manager this morning.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last month that Ten Hag was identified as a preferred candidate to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the dugout. Now, after weeks of talks with Ajax, the two clubs have come to an agreement and Ten Hag has signed a three-year contract.

He will see out the remainder of this season in Amsterdam as he targets a third Eredivisie crown in four seasons. Meanwhile United face an almighty fight to finish in the top-four if they want to give Ten Hag Champions League football.

Speaking when the announcement was imminent, Neville said: "My view, at this moment of time. There are a lot of things the players could have done better, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could have done better, Ralf Rangnick maybe could have done better. But fundamentally the club is broken on and off the pitch.

"One thing I'll guarantee you is that Manchester United will come back and they'll be successful, because the world is round and they're too big and a great club. I've got no worries about the long-term, it might be five years, 10 years or 15 years.

"Just like I never had any doubts that Liverpool would come back one day. I feel sorry for him [Ten Hag]."
