Gary Neville explains why Ralf Rangnick is struggling to make Manchester United impact

Gary Neville has compared his experience of managing Valencia to the situation that Ralf Rangnick currently finds himself in at Manchester United, admitting that it is hard for an interim manager to make his mark.

Rangnick, who will be hoping to see his side get back to winning ways when Brighton & Hove Albion visit Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, was installed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's replacement on a short-term deal until the end of the season back in November.

The German, although he has only lost twice since taking charge, has struggled to have the impact that United's supporters had hoped for, with Saturday's 1-1 draw with Southampton their latest setback in their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Whilst criticism for Rangnick is starting to go up through the gears, Neville has displayed a level of sympathy towards the German, highlighting how he, himself, struggled to make an impact at Valencia in 2015/16 after taking charge.

"The manager sets the tone for the club," Neville told Sky Sports. "Ralf Rangnick has not got the power at this moment in time and the control because the players think he is there for five months.

"I have been there. I was there in Valencia where, basically, I knew I was taking the job until the end of the season. But that was not my excuse - I failed miserably and made bad mistakes.

"But I am saying that it is very difficult to implement anything for the long-term when you're only there for five months. You cannot really influence the dressing room that much and that is one of the issues that Ralf Rangnick has at this moment in time."

Rangnick, who is poised to move into a consultancy position ahead of the start of next season, has taken charge of 13 games so far, winning just six in all competitions.
