Gary Neville explains how Erik ten Hag has transformed Manchester United after Carabao Cup win

Former right-back Gary Neville waxed lyrical about Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag following the club's 2-0 win over Newcastle United in Sunday's Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

United, who will immediately switch their focus to Wednesday night's FA Cup fifth-round tie with West Ham United, ended their six-year wait for a trophy thanks to first-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford. The duo each scored in the space of just six minutes, meaning the contest was effectively over by the half-time break.

Although United had to watch Newcastle dictate possession for long spells of the second half, the Magpies did little to threaten David de Gea's clean sheet. United managed the game well and were helped by Ten Hag making clever substitutions at key moments, not least Aaron Wan-Bissaka's half-time introduction in place of Diogo Dalot.

United will now be hoping that they can use their Carabao Cup success as a platform to build on moving forwards, especially when they are still competing in three separate competitions this season. Ten Hag has resurrected the club's fortunes and has turned the careers of several players around, almost beyond belief.

And for former United captain Neville, Ten Hag has overseen a brilliant job so far, outlining several ways in which he has put United back on the map.

"[It is a] huge day for Manchester United," Neville told Sky Sports. "Casemiro is at the heart of it but really it's about one man having transformed this team from whiners into winners in such a short period of time Erik ten Hag - what a job that he's done.

"Players that we'd given up on, players that we thought shouldn't play for Manchester United again, they're still out there performing at a really high level.

"They've got a spirit, they've got a fight and they've got a real chance of coming back and winning trophies beyond this again because you can see something emerging with him. "He makes good decisions in matches, his subs in the second half were critical in making sure United saw this game out."
