Gary Neville delivers savage response to comments criticism amid Arsenal's £100m spending spree

Arsenal have spent over £100million for the second successive summer transfer window as Mikel Arteta and Edu work to strengthen the squad.

Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos have all made the move to the Emirates Stadium this summer. Mikel Arteta hinted that the Gunners could make further signings before the transfer deadline 'if the market allows it' following the 6-0 thumping of Sevilla on Saturday.

There has been a shift in Arsenal's recruitment policy, with a focus on signing young talents that have the potential to improve exponentially with training and guidance, whilst having the right attributes and characteristics to fit into Arteta's system. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has hit back at fans on Twitter after the Sky Sports pundit criticised the Gunners' transfer business last summer.

Arsenal were well-beaten by newly-promoted side Brentford in their opening Premier League fixture last season, losing 2-0, with Mikel Arteta's side missing a number of key players due to injury and Covid. Fans have since reposted a video of Neville slamming the Gunners' recruitment policy for the last few seasons.

After a positive pre-season, Arsenal fans are feeling optimistic ahead of the new campaign and tagged Neville in the video that was dug up from over a year ago. Responding to Arsenal fans on Twitter, the United legend replied: "You blew up with the best chance you’ll have of finishing 4th! Is that the strategy?"

Neville's dig referred back to last season after Arsenal missed out on qualifying for the Champions League following defeats to Tottenham and Newcastle at the end of the 2021/22 campaign. The Gunners needed just four points from their final three matches to confirm a top four spot, but were pipped by north London rivals Spurs in devastating fashion.

Arteta will be hoping his side can get off to the perfect start and avoid similar criticism to last summer after a strong pre-season including wins over Everton, Chelsea and Sevilla. The Gunners travel to Selhurst Park and take on Patrick Vieira's Crystal Palace side on Friday night in the opening game of the new Premier League campaign.
