Gary Neville claims Manchester United may have consulted next manager over Bruno Fernandes contract

Gary Neville has expressed his surprise at Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United extension but feels the decision may have been sparked after consultation with the next Reds boss.

On Friday (April 1), the Portugal star put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Old Trafford with the view to another year after an impressive start to his United career. Despite this campaign being a disappointing one across the board, the tying down of the 27-year-old showed their clear intent going forward.

Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are among the candidates in the frame to become the next United manager. Although who will be in the hot seat come August remains unknown, the United legend nudged the idea forward that the future tactician could have been consulted prior to the Fernandes decision.

"I was surprised by the fact that they've done it without consulting a new manager - maybe they have consulted the new manager," Neville said. "But he's been outstanding since he arrived."

Fernandes, who single-handedly fired Portugal to the World Cup finals with his brace earlier in the week, led the line for Ralf Rangnick 's side after international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo missed out through illness. The German's decision to leave Marcus Rashford out did raise suspicions amongst the fans as the former Sporting CP playmaker played as a false nine.
