Gary Neville has called on Cristiano Ronaldo to “stand up now and speak” as rumours surrounding the Manchester United star’s future continue to swirl.

In the wake of Saturday’s humiliating loss to Brentford, reports have suggested the club could look to terminate the 37-year-old’s contract due to fears regarding his attitude.

Ronaldo has hit back at such a narrative, denouncing the “lies” in a social media post and revealing he will conduct an interview to lift the lid on his situation.

As it stands, there have been no takers for the Portugal forward despite his desire to leave.

Chelsea passed up the chance to sign him, while Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid have also ruled out moves.

After a miserable start to life under Erik ten Hag, the sideshow surrounding Ronaldo’s future is yet another unwelcome distraction and Neville – who won three Premier League titles at Old Trafford alongside the forward – has called on his former teammate to speak up.

“Why does the greatest player of all time (in my opinion) have to wait two weeks to tell Manchester United fans the truth?” he tweeted.

“Stand up now and speak. The club is in crisis and it needs leaders to lead. He’s the only one who can grab this situation by the scruff of the neck!”
