Gary Neville and Roy Keane agree on costly Chelsea mistake Vs Man Utd amid Kepa criticism

Gary Neville and Roy Keane both think Chelsea should have done a better job at seeing the game out as the Blues conceded late on against Manchester United to draw 1-1 at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues went ahead in the 87th minute thanks to a Jorginho penalty but were pegged back moments before full-time as Casemiro headed in to save a point for Erik ten Hag's side. Having huffed and puffed without much creativity, reward or spark all game, Graham Potter will have been frustrated to see two points dropped so quickly.

It's the second time Chelsea have conceded from a winning position after the 90th minute this season after Harry Kane's 96th-minute header on the second game of the season.

After the match, Potter's men didn't get much sympathy though. Former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink said, "Overall, did they do enough? No. but they got their noses in front, when you do, you need to see it out, big teams see it out even if they’re not playing well."

He added: "They didn’t do it right, they went on the back foot, when you have throw-ins, throw it in the corners kill time. They let too many crosses in and if you do that Man United have players who can put the ball in the back of the net."

Roy Keane agreed with the poor defending and was disappointed to see the organisation and management of the game from a Chelsea perspective, saying, "Really good header. Again, Chelsea were all over the place considering they have an experienced centre-back.

"When the ball comes in, it’s situations like this, who wants it the most. It’s the modern full-back, wing-back, laziness, no desire. An amazing header. I look at my goalkeeper, if I can get a hand to it you can do a little bit more but the header - look at the desire. If you’re in the Chelsea dressing room, you’d be sick, I’d be disappointed for my goalkeeper."

Having given away a needless freekick late into the match, Chelsea failed to clear effectively, allowing Luke Shaw too much time to cross before Ben Chiwell dropped early and was outnumbered and outmuscled in a two-on-one situation at the far post. Kepa Arrizabalaga was also able to get a hand on the shot but not stop it from spinning in off the post.

Neville, speaking on the Gary Neville podcast, was also surprised at how Chelsea allowed Ten Hag's team back into the game. He said: "You think it's Chelsea's game [when Jorginho scores the penalty]. But it was about two fouls actually this game. The one by McTominay and the one from Jorginho who tripped up Elanga and I thought that Manchester United didn't have enough attacking players on the pitch.

"All Chelsea had to do was try to manage the game and control the game, not giving freekicks away was a big part of that because it allowed United to get bodies in the box. That's what happened, it came from a second phase from Manchester United having bodies up the pitch and an overload."
