Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher disagree over who should be next Manchester United manager

Manchester United have identified Erik ten Hag as their preferred candidate in the race to become their next permanent manager - but two of the most renowned pundits disagree over who the club should appoint.

After crashing out of the Champions League on Tuesday night, the Old Trafford giants have made progress in their search to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Key figures in the boardroom are, as things stand, favouring Ten Hag, though their final decision has yet to be made.

Mauricio Pochettino is another frontrunner as he continues to come under pressure at Paris Saint-Germain. But there are several candidates out there - as Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher discuss. Here's what the two pundits have said about three of the contenders to take over at United.

Jamie Carragher on Erik ten Hag

Speaking about the highly-rated Ajax coach after the Dutch side were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday night, Carragher told CBS Sports: "I'd go with Ten Hag because I think he's an up and coming manager.

"When you look at Ajax, yes, they are obviously dominant within their league. But what he's done in the Champions League in terms of the first Ajax team that he sort of built and got to the final - then that fell apart.

"Then to create this team, yes it's gone out at the last 16, but if you were judging him as a coach then you'd look at the group stage as well - winning every game and the way they win. It's not just about what trophy a manager has won now, how his team play, how he comes across.

"He's at a club now, Ajax, where you can actually go and take their players or managers - selling clubs and I like the way they play for the manager. I was watching him at the end and liked the way he conducted himself. He shook the hand with every official, he stopped one of his players who was trying to get to the officials and was emotional, screaming and shouting.

"He had a nice bit of class about him because you can't always win. If it was me, I'd be thinking he plays really good football, he seems a good character, built two teams at Ajax that have done really well and that's what Manchester United need - somebody to build a team."

Gary Neville on Mauricio Pochettino

Speaking in December, former United captain Neville said: "I would like Pochettino to be the next manager. I think that he has got experience of the league, he would play the right type of football.

"It feels like the moment for him to step up. He's got to the Champions League final and is now managing big stars, some big characters and personalities. That will help him and I've always liked him. I have always loved the way that he has operated.

"He fits the club and he works well with young players. He gets the best out of players. He's a good coach. He also works with people the right way. For me, it would be him, but he's got his job at Paris Saint-Germain and if he does well there they won't let him go."

Gary Neville on Diego Simeone

Fast forward three months and the change in situation has prompted a shift in what Neville thinks should happen. He said: "Diego Simeone should be a candidate, but it's never been achievable to get him out of Atletico Madrid.

"He is wedded in there, he is tied. But it would be brilliant to see him in the Premier League. Fantastic coach, brutal in how he approaches the game, I think in every single way. He's tough and United need a tough manager. United need a manager who can compete with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola - they're the best - so they need someone who can stand on that touchline and feel equal to them and I think Simeone could.

"I wouldn't rule Simeone out at all, but I think Ten Hag and Pochettino would be the way forward because they will want a progressive coach that plays a certain way, that probably is a little bit cheaper and available."
