Gary Neville aims subtle dig at Chelsea owner Todd Boehly amid US ownership 'danger' claim

Gary Neville has labelled US ownership in the Premier League as a 'danger' amid reports the Glazers want to sell a minority stake at Manchester United.

Many Premier League and EFL clubs are owned by American people and investment banks, and the Glazer family have come under heavy criticism in recent years, with debts at the club rising to nearly £500m last year. Things on the pitch are not much better amid a tough start to the new season for the Red Devils and their new manager Erik ten Hag, and a lack of direct backing has caused MUST (Man United Supporters Trust) to come out after the latest Brentford loss to demand change.

Since then, many potential takeover options have appeared for a club that has a price tag of £6billion attached to its shoulders. Michael Knighton was the first to come declare his interest in conducting a 'hostile takeover' of United. Sir Jim Ratcliffe expressed his desire to buy United for the first time in public this week but reports soon emerged elsewhere claiming the Glazers had already entered exclusive talks with US private equity firm Apollo for a minority stake at the club, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Ratcliffe was the billionaire who had his late bid for Chelsea rejected after he bypassed the whole Raine Group process to try and gatecrash the whole process. Of course, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital eventually purchased the club from Roman Abramovich for £4.25bn.

Amid the takeover reports at Manchester United, former defender Neville has admitted he is worried about the 'danger' US ownership groups cause to the league and has demanded action from the Premier League. Of course, this could be seen as an indirect jibe at Boehly and Clearlake Capital, an American investment firm.

He tweeted: "The US model of sports ownership is all about significant return on investment (at all cost ie Super League and Big Picture). The ownership model in England needs to change and US money is a bigger danger to that than any other international money. We need a regulator asap!"
