Gary McAllister backed for surprise return amid Leeds United manager search

Andy Couzens has suggested that Leeds United should consider appointing Gary McAllister as interim manager until the end of the season.

McAllister played 294 games and scored 45 goals during a glittering six years at Leeds. He helped the Whites lift the First Division title under Howard Wilkinson in 1992 and spent just under a year in the managerial hotseat at Elland Road in 2008.

The former Liverpool and Leicester City midfielder also managed Coventry City, and has served assistant roles at Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Rangers respectively.

He worked as understudy to Steven Gerrard , who has been linked with the Leeds job, in his second stint at Villa Park, and has been out of work since Gerrard was relieved of his duties in October.

Michael Skubala has overseen a 2-2 draw and a 2-0 defeat in back-to-back games against Manchester United as caretaker boss, but former Leeds academy graduate Couzens believes McAllister is the right man for the job.

“I’ll throw another name out there. On an interim basis, something until the end of the season, someone who’s got experience in the Premier League; Gary McAllister. Bring him in, he knows the game, he knows the game inside out," Couzens told LeedsUnited.News.

“He’s out of work. His record as Leeds manager was a good one. If you’re looking into him and you need some help, there’s no better man than him in my eyes in that sense."
