Gary Lineker sends Harvey Elliott message after Champions League 'record' broken

Gary Lineker offered high praise to Harvey Elliott after the Liverpool youngster surpassed his own Champions League goalscoring record with just his second goal in the competition.

Poking fun at himself, Lineker was quick to point out that the 19-year-old has now scored more goals than himself despite his relative inexperience in the competition. Scoring his first goal in the competition at Ibrox, his delight was clear to see once more as Jurgen Klopp's side successfully booked their place in the Round of 16.

Having never mustered a goal in Europe's elite footballing competition, Lineker will be remembered largely for his goalscoring antics across his almost 20-year career. Taking to social media after the game, the 61-year-old was keen to remind followers of Elliott surpassing his own 'record'.

Lineker wrote: "A first Champions League goal for Harvey Elliott. He now has more goals in the Champions League/European Cup than….me," followed by a winking emoji. Lineker was false to say that it was Elliott's first goal in Europe, as he opened his account against Rangers earlier this month.

Having settled into the team very well so far this season, the teenager is one of the bigger positive talking points as the Reds' have struggled to find consistency all the same. Jordan Henderson could be seen holding his knee, with Klopp later confirming it was nothing to be worried about.

Facing off against Leeds United this weekend, Liverpool will be hoping to build on their European victory and distinguish any lingering feelings following last weekend's defeat at Nottingham Forest.
