Gary Lineker's sarcastic Jurgen Klopp remark has not gone down as planned on social media after the Liverpool boss signed a new deal at Anfield.
Reports began circulating on Thursday that the German was due to extend his contract with the Reds. Lineker replied to a tweet and joked: "Don’t know what they see in him". Klopp's credentials cannot be questioned after he's delivered the Premier League and the Champions League during his tenure.
However Lineker's witty remark didn't get the reception he was perhaps looking for. One fan hit back and said: "He’s an excellent manager, Gary" to which the TV presenter said: "Really? You think?" Lineker was also warned that his comments would be taken in the wrong way, to which he replied: "I'm hoping so".
Lineker has regularly complimented Klopp and his team, especially in recent seasons. The German has admitted his decision to stay put was, in part, down to his wife's desire to remain in Liverpool. Klopp could yet lead the Reds to the quadruple this term having already captured the Carabao Cup.
The Merseysiders continue to invest shrewdly and are looking to retain their leading lights, which sets the squad up to remain competitive for several years. Klopp is central to their plans and sees plenty of potential in the current playing group and the club.
He told the Liverpool website : "I had to ask myself the question: Is it right for Liverpool that I stay longer? Along with my two assistant managers, Pep Lijnders and Pete Krawietz, we came to the conclusion it was a ‘Yes!’ There is a freshness about us as a club still and this energises me.
HAVE YOUR SAY! Will Klopp and Liverpool win the quadruple? Let us know in the comments
"For as long as I have been here, our owners have been unbelievably committed and energetic about this club and it is clear that right now this applies to our future as much as I’ve ever known. In Billy Hogan and Julian Ward we have leaders throughout the club who are completely focused on renewal and refreshing so we can continue to compete at the very highest level.
“We have managed to harness the best of what we have created already at the same time as injecting fresh impetus into our environment. The new AXA Training Centre is a superb home for us and the fact that Anfield will grow even bigger soon with the Anfield Road development, I can’t wait for that.
“We are a club that is constantly moving in the right direction. We have a clear idea of what we want; we have a clear idea of how we try to achieve it. That’s always a great position to start from."
