Gary Lineker has poked fun at himself on Twitter by highlighting how Liverpool's teenage star Harvey Elliott has more goals than him in European football.
For all of Lineker's goal-scoring heroics throughout his career, whether that be at Everton, Tottenham or indeed Champions League titans Barcelona, he never managed a single strike in club football's most elite competition. In contrast, Elliott notched what was actually his second against Ajax on Wednesday night.
Lineker wrote: "A first Champions League goal for Harvey Elliott. He now has more goals in the Champions League/European Cup than….me," followed by a winking emoji. However, Elliott actually nabbed his first goal in European football last week during than 7-1 battering of Rangers at Ibrox.
With that being said, Lineker's sentiment remains true - Elliott does have more goals than him in the Champions League. The Match of the Day presenter's tweet came after the Reds ran out 3-0 winners in Amsterdam against Ajax.
Elliott bagged his side's third, capping off another impressive individual display for Liverpool on the biggest stage of all. The result sealed the Reds' place in the knockout stages of European club football's most elite competition.
However, there could be some stern tests awaiting Elliott and his teammates in the round of 16 stage as Liverpool are all but certain to only finish second in their group. Jurgen Klopp's side would have to batter Napoli by eight goals or more to surpass the Serie A titans in the final group game.

The teenage midfielder has been in stellar form for the Reds so far this term and has been the subject of praise from manager Klopp this season.
Speaking last month, the Liverpool manager explained: "I like talking about him, just it is really early (to do that). That's Harvey, a real talent but we all need luck in moments. Let’s just hope that he can go through this and develop and build on this wonderful basis.
"It cannot be positive enough with the impression we have got so far, but [can] we judge now what he can reach? Nobody knows that, it would be going too early in a career. That's why I am completely calm with it. It's great.
"He didn't get different treatment since he performed outstandingly well, compared with the treatment he got before. He is the same boy. We literally love him because he is outstanding as a person as well."
