David de Gea mocked by Gary Lineker who dishes out brutal nickname after dire Man Utd error

Gary Lineker has labelled David de Gea "David de Howler" after the Manchester United goalkeeper's mistake on Sunday evening.

The Spanish stopper failed to keep out a tame long-range strike from Said Benrahma in his team's 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium. The clanger could prove costly come the end of the season, with United battling to hold on to a top four spot.

De Gea's existing deal expires at the end of this season, casting doubt over his Old Trafford future. He'll want to forget about Sunday evening's game and Lineker's unflattering nickname as soon as possible ahead of a massive month for Erik ten Hag's side.

United are still fourth in the Premier League table, but Liverpool are now just a point behind them having played a game more. United's remaining four league games are against Wolves (home), Bournemouth (away), Chelsea (home) and Fulham (home).

Three home wins will be enough for the Red Devils to get over the Champions League line. Ten Hag will also have one eye on the FA Cup final, with United taking on local rivals Manchester City on June 3. It will be the first ever Manchester derby in an FA Cup final.

De Gea is expected to play in all five games and will be hoping to show his quality after Sunday evening's debacle. Analysing De Gea's mistake, Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport: "It's a bad mistake. He will take full responsibility for that.

What do you make of Gary Lineker's nickname for David de Gea? Let us know in the comments below!

"His left foot does slip slightly but that's no excuse, he's got full contact on the ball. It's not like he is stretching and getting fingertips on it."

Ten Hag has backed De Gea to bounce back from the blunder. He told reporters: "Mistakes are part of football and in this team you have to deal with it and bounce back because it is a team sport. Over the season he is the one with the most clean sheets and also we did it as a team. It can happen, it's football but everybody has to take responsibility."

Ferdinand thinks De Gea still has a future at Old Trafford... if Ten Hag believes the goalkeeper is good enough with his feet. He told claimed: "The question mark about him I think is whether he's good enough with his feet to play the Erik ten Hag way.

"In terms of shot-stopping he's made a mistake today but that's not the area I question him. Is he a good enough footballer to play for Manchester United? The only person that can answer that is Erik ten Hag and we'll know at the end of this season."

Peter Crouch added: "It's a strange one, because he's conceded goals from his own mistakes but he's also kept the most clean sheets in the league.

"If he's in contract negotiations making mistakes like that is never going to help. He's been a top-class goalkeeper over the years, but at the moment it feels like he's making big errors in big, big games."
