Gary Lineker makes major Mikel Arteta prediction as Arsenal prove huge point to critics

Arsenal continued their superb season in the Premier League on Sunday with a commanding 2-0 victory over Newcastle United. The win means the Gunners are only one point behind Manchester City at the top of the table with three games remaining.

Martin Odegaard's 15 goal of the season put Mikel Arteta's men ahead in the first-half shortly after the hosts had a penalty overturned after a lengthy VAR check. The three points were confirmed late in the second half when Gabriel Martinelli's cross was forced into his own net by Fabian Schar.

The Gunners have now won 25 of their 35 games this season, earning 81 points - their most since the 2007/08 season. Whilst the title seems a difficult task due to Man City's astonishing recent record, this campaign will certainly be one to remember.

The task over the next three months, ahead of the 2023/24 season, will be to ensure the club don't fall off and return to the mediocrity on display in the last few years.

Despite the disappointment at being able to maintain their status as league leaders, there's no reason why this Arsenal team cannot be Man City's biggest challengers next term - something BBC Sport's Gary Lineker has tipped them to do.

Following Sunday's win over Newcastle, the former Leicester City man tweeted: "Arsenal will probably come up a little short, but they've made serious progress in the last couple of years.

"Arteta has done a brilliant job and his team will be winning trophies in the not-too-distant future."
