Gary Lineker makes Kalvin Phillips 'progress' hint after Leeds United agree transfer fee with Man City

Pundit Gary Lineker has tipped Kalvin Phillips to improve under Pep Guardiola after Leeds United reached a transfer fee with Manchester City.

News broke on Friday afternoon of City and United agreeing to a £42million deal with add-ons for Phillips, ending his 10-plus year association with his hometown club. According to The Athletic, Darko Gyabi, an 18-year-old midfielder at City, is expected to join United in a separate deal.

With two years left on his Elland Road contract, the 26-year-old will be joining the reigning Premier League champions and will get his first taste of UEFA Champions League football under one of the best manager's not just in England but in the world. And former England international Linekar believes Phillips can improve even further.

"Great for this fine young player’s progress to work under Pep," Lineker tweeted to his 8.5million followers on social media.

Phillips missed large chunks of last season due to injury and said before last Christmas that his rise from Championship star to England Player of the Year was the result of hard work.

“Going from Championship to Premier League to England Player of the Year, it was an eye-opener and made me realise, ‘I can do this’,” Phillips told the Mail before Christmas. “Everything came together, the hard work taking me where I wanted to be."
