Gary Lineker makes Everton joke after much-needed victory

Gary Lineker has jokingly claimed Everton's win to be 'the most important victory the world will ever see' - a joke some Blues fans might tend to agree with.

The Toffees picked up their first win of the season against West Ham at Goodison Park, with Neal Maupay's 54th-minute snapshot the only goal from a hard-fought game. Frank Lampard's side resisted Hammers pressure and rode their luck at points, with Said Benrahma hitting the post and Maxwel Cornet spurning a golden chance late on.

David Moyes' side had 14 attempts at Goodison Park but failed to convert any into goals, with few big chances for either side. Everton's solidity at the back finally produced the three-point haul to match the heart and commitment shown over the previous few weeks.

The relief etched onto Frank Lampard's face was clear for all to see as he celebrated with the fans at full-time, and the Toffees boss admitted how important it was to get that first win on the board. But former Blues striker Lineker has gone one step further by labelling it 'the most important victory the world will ever see' - a pointed joke at House of Commons speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who earlier on Sunday made a similar remark about Queen Elizabeth's funeral.

With Everton one of just two winless sides left at kick-off - along with bottom of the table Leicester City - and out of the bottom three on goal difference, some Blues fans may be inclined to agree with Lineker's exaggerated statement. Three points takes Lampard's side into 13th going into the international break.
