Gary Lineker in Aaron Mooy wind-up as Celtic star takes centre stage during on air Alan Shearer troll

Celtic star Aaron Mooy has found himself at the centre of a back and forth between England legends Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer live on air.

The 32-year-old has been a standout for Australia on their surprise surge to the knockout rounds of the World Cup, with the experienced playmaker proving to be vital to sealing the Socceroos' showdown with Argentina in Qatar. However, the knockout rounds proved a step too far for Graham Arnold's men as they were sent out by Lionel Messi and co despite a battling performance.

The superstar frontman marked his 1000th game with a goal and a place in the quarter-final stages, but it was Mooy that was the man in focus for Newcastle United legend Shearer before a ball was kicked. The former St Mirren and Brighton midfielder was set for a run down of his performances in the group stage of the competition, but Lineker couldn't resist a cheeky swipe at Shearer.

Lineker joked on BBC: “One of Australia’s standouts has been Aaron Mooy. You’re doing a piece on him as he’s your twin brother.

Shearer quickly laughed off the comment stating: “That’s bullying Gary!” However, he would continue to talk up the Celtic veteran.

Shearer went on: “He’s the heartbeat of that team, he’s been their best player, played every minute of their three games, had more touches, more passes, more tackles, won possession more than anyone else in his team. He’s brave in terms of possession.

"He’s not afraid to get on the ball, and most things go through him when they’re attacking and defending. He’s gonna have to put in some performance if they’re going to get a result.”
